Superman: Doomsday

I watched Superman: Doomsday the other night and here's my review "Meh." The entire thing feels rushed, but I guess that's to be expected when you only have an hour and change to tell a huge story. I didn't like how the return of Superman ignored so much of what happened in the comics - with the four different Supermen storyline. The animation was decent enough and the voice actors were okay but overall, the entire movie left me feeling empty and bored. Doomsday shows up, Superman fights him, they both die, there's a Superman clone, then the real Superman comes back, end of story. If you're a comic book geek, you'll probably enjoy it on some level but it wasn't quite what I expected.

Hulk Vs. Update 12/10/08

Marvel released a new trailer for the Hulk Vs. DVD and it's pretty impressive. Sabretooth, Deadpool and Omega Red make appearances.

The Wolverine part looks like it has a pretty decent story to it, whereas the Thor part looks like it's going to be 45 minutes of the Hulk and Thor kicking the crap out of each other. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I am drawn to the Wolverine story more and more each time they reveal more of the story.

I highly suggest viewing the trailer, it's starting to look very promising.

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Marvel announced on their site yesterday that they have an Avengers animated series currently in production. It will hit the public in 2011. They've got a full plate of upcoming animated shows, including the Iron Man show and Wolverine and the X-Men. This one looks like it's really geared toward kids with the style of animation, so if I remember to watch it in 2011, I'll probably sample a couple of episodes before I make a decision.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Review.

So, The Clone Wars. I'll say this: it didn't suck, but it wasn't the greatest thing I've ever seen either. So, it was just kind of meh. I will still Tivo the series this Fall when they start showing episodes on the Cartoon Network. So I guess I should do a review. Ok, just to get this out of the way,

:::::SPOILER WARNING:::::

DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU STILL PLAN TO SEE THE MOVIE

All right. Now here's the good and the bad. And there's PLENTY of both, so strap yourself in, we're in for a long ride.

The Good:
1. The frantic pace. You could kind of tell that it was four half hour episodes and then someone came along and said, "Hey, what if we put this together into a movie?" It got a lot accomplished, so I can't fault it for that when most of the time I'm sitting there in the theater bored out of my skull at certain times.

2. The music. Most of the music had a tribal take on the John Williams classic score. And they kept that up for most of the movie, so it was a nice twist.

3. The character design. I've gotta admit, all of the characters were really well designed, and they all had one cool feature about them. Anakin's hair was pretty cool, Obi-Wan's mustache moved independent of his beard when he talked, Dooku was pretty awesome, it's just stunning to see these characters in a new kind of form. It was really executed nicely, and it's kind of exciting to look forward to the series.

The Bad:
1. The beginning. They did a weird voiceover/montage thing instead of the word crawl. It was kind of annoying and didn't really fit with the rest of the movie. I think some executive at Warner Brothers must have told them to do it.

2. Ahsoka Tano. She is Anakin's Padawan that no one ever knew about before this series, and she was far and away the most annoying character in the movie. I watched some interviews with the director and he explained that she is supposed to be the audience's "touchstone", but they made her way too young. It really started to feel like they specifically targeted it for children. She has an annoying habit of nicknaming people and she doesn't realize when those nicknames are annoying. She calls Anakin, "Skyguy" and Jabba's son "Stinky". But the thing that almost made me walk out of the theater was she kept calling Artoo, "Artooie". OVER THE LINE! There is also NO WAY the Jedi Order would have allowed her to become a Padawan. She is so impetuous and hard-headed, she would have gotten thrown out long before a Master chose her. Anakin also calls her "Snipes" and every time he said it, I wanted to punch CGI Anakin in the face.

One interesting side-note: Anakin was not a Master, even when he was on the Jedi Council. So, logically, something happened to Ahsoka. I'm praying she gets eaten by a Starlacc, but I'm assuming she gets reassigned to another Jedi or is untrainable and is sent to the Jedi Service Corps to become a melon farmer or something.

3. Artoo flying. Seriously, they need to knock this off. This time he flew a very long ways from a very high altitude. Quit it, Lucasfilm.

4. If this was indeed a movie intended for kids (what I'm reading online now is that it was), it was pretty violent. I know killing droids and clones someone skirts the issue, but there was one scene where Jabba is shown the severed heads of the bounty hunters that he sent after Ventress. I didn't mind it, but parent with small children might want to watch out.

5. Kids. There were a ton of kids in the theater. Not cool. One kid in front of me insisted on reading anything that could be read on the screen. Highly annoying.

Hulk vs. Wolverine Update 7/29/08.

Another Hulk vs. Wolverine update. Some pretty interesting stuff, especially the part where they say that the Hulk will show up in the Wolverine & the X-Men series. I also like that they've inserted Deadpool, Sabretooth and Omega Red into the story. Can't wait to buy it when it comes out.

Hulk vs. Wolverine.

Check out this article over at Marvel.com. They partnered with Lionsgate to release some Direct-To-DVD/Blue-Ray animated movies. They're starting off with "Hulk Vs.", which will be available in January of 2009. The first half of the DVD is 45-minutes of Hulk vs. Thor, with the second half as Hulk vs. Wolverine clocking in at 33-minutes. Pretty awesome. I have a reprint of the Hulk #180-181 and I can't wait to see it on DVD. There's a trailer on that page and it's pretty awesome. With this and the two animated TV series (Iron Man and Wolverine & the X-Men) I really think that Marvel is onto something here. I can't wait for that to hit stores. I am pretty stoked.

Wolverine and the X-Men Trailer #2.

Marvel released another article about the new Wolverine cartoon today. You can see the newest trailer for the series there as well. I've been psyched to see this show for awhile, it looks really cool and really well-done. I can't wait for 2009 to get here.

Wolverine and the X-Men Trailer.

Marvel released a trailer for Wolverine and the X-Men. You can see it here. It. Looks. AWESOME. I can't wait for it to start. As I've said before, I've gotta figure out a way to get Nicktoons Network before the end of the year. Hmmm, I just checked my cable provider, and it looks like I get it. I will have to verify that tonight. If I do get it, that makes me even more excited for this show to start.

Justice League: The New Frontier.

I saw Justice League: The New Frontier over the weekend. I thought it was just ok. It seemed a little rushed. According to the wikipedia entry, they cut and change a lot of the story from the original comic. The main villain, which apparently manifested itself as a giant floating dinosaur island, really wasn't fleshed out too well in my opinion. There wasn't really a reason why it was attacking Earth. The animation style was pretty cool though, and most of the characters had older looking costumes, because it was set in the 50s. It was an interesting take on the DCU. I would rent it if I were you though.

There was a preview for Batman: Gotham Knight that actually looks pretty cool. It will feature six short stories that are animated in different styles, including Japanese Anime. So that is something to look forward to. I think it's supposed to be released before the next live-action movie. Superman: Doomsday is also on my list of movies to see; I kind of have high hopes for that one. I'll let you know what I think when I see it.

Iron Man & Wolverine Animated Series.

Exciting news! Marvel announced that the both the Iron Man & Wolverine Animated Series will be on Nicktoons in 2009. Each will get 26 episodes. Sounds awesome, the only problem is; I don't think I get Nicktoons. I need to figure that out before 2009.

In other X-Men news, Marvel also released a Q&A: X-Men: Divided We Stand Part 1 article.

The Invincible Iron Man DVD Review

I watched this movie over the weekend for free thanks to my local library. Good thing, too, 'cause I would've been bummed if I actually bought it. I got the two Ultimate Avengers animated movies and those are decent but I didn't really care for this one. The animation is good, but I think they messed with Iron Man's origin a little too much.

Tony Stark's father is still alive in this version, and Tony gets kicked off the board of directors at Stark Industries. There's some mystical stuff going down in China where Jim Rhodes was heading up an assignment to raise a sunken, ancient temple. According to some prophecy, if the temple gets raised, then the Mandarin will return and kill a bunch of people or something. Oh, and also according the prophecy, the "Iron Knight" will come to fight the Mandarin, and one...will...die.

Tony ends up in China with a metal shard in his chest, but his life is saved by Rhodes and some Chinese monk. He is forced to build a suit of armor in order to get the temple back to its original sunken condition. Too late, 'cause the Four Elementals of Mandarin have been let loose and are looking for the remaining rings necessary to bring the Mandarin back. Tony dons a suit of aqua armor in order to retrieve one of the rings, but it doesn't really work and the Mandarin is summoned and takes over the body of the girl who has been helping Tony all along. She's the last remaining descendant. Tony puts on the old school armor he built early on in the movie and defeats the Mandarin, along with the help of the girl's resistance.

All in all, it was somewhat entertaining, but I didn't like all of the mystical stuff they added to Stark's origins. The movie ends with Tony buying back controlling interest in Stark Industries, promoting Jim Rhodes and turning the company over to his father. A little too Batman Begins, if you ask me.
